Best Way to Insert Flash – swfobject

If you often use flash content for your web sites, and have ever wondered about the best way to insert it, then the swfobject is it. The swfobject is a tiny javascript file that allows you to easily embed flash content onto your web page, with very little fuss and also has other great benefits. The code used is so much cleaner then the default Adobe flash embed script, and has benefits such as being HTML & XHTML compliant.

Apart from being able to detect the plugin in all major browsers, the thing I like about the swfobject the most is the SEO benefit. Using the swfobject alows you to insert alternate content (including text) that is only seen by either people who dont have flash installed and bots (search engines), so the content will be crawled. Using this technique you can also insert a screen shot of the flash file so people with flash not installed see a still image, instead of nothing.

Another great feature of the swfobject is a thing called ExpressInstall. With this enabled it allows users with an older version of flash installed to be able to upgrade their flash player without even leaving your site, which is a really cool feature to have, especially when the swfobject is completely free.

I could give examples here of how to use the swfobject, but the official swfobject site already has great examples, and a full list of the features and benefits, plus has the latest version to download as well, so check the site out here.

The best way for inserting a flash to website, blog, etc is using AnvSoft Photo Flash Maker, which can be taken as a freeware since it doesn’t set any restriction to all features though there will be a company logo for the last slide, if you mind this or don’t use this software for commercial purpose, it is undoubtedly the best freeware for making flash slideshow for your Website, Blogger, MySpace, WordPress, YouTube, iPod, iPhone, PSP and more.

No Flash knowledge or programming skills are required to use this Photo Flash Maker since the program has many built-in features, such as transition effects, theme templates which include basic and advanced theme, etc. Everybody can create a swf file with elegant photo flash slideshow in less than 5 minutes. You can create a SWF file with the following three simple steps:

Step 1: Add digital photos to Photo Flash Slideshow
Step 2: Select your favorite theme from the built-in theme templates
Step 3: Publish SWF file and upload to Go2Album for sharing

Generally, the above steps will enable you to make amazing flash slideshow; however, Photo Flash Slideshow also gives the user more options to fully customize the flash slideshow:
    1. Edit photos: you can edit the flash with description, text&artclips; you can also embed different URL link to different flashes, when you click on the flash, it will direct you to the website you’ve set.
    2. Apply Transition: under the transition effect tab, more than sixty transition effects are available for selecting; can set different transition&photo duration time for different flash.
    3. Change SWF size: under both the basic and advanced themes, you are able to change the SWF size.
    4. Adjust theme effect: under the advanced theme, you can click Customize Prosperities button to change the parameters regarding of the output swf file, such as title, background color, background music, description, thumbnail, etc.
    5. Output options: there are three output options available to choose; you can choose to create a flash file only, make a gift/presentation CD/DVD, create flash files and upload to Go2Album(if upload to Go2Album, you will get the code to embed the SWF file into HTML or insert to your blog, space, etc.)

For more information, you can refer to the website of AnvSoft Photo Flash Maker.

The output SWF file can be open with Adobe Flash Player software. You can also you some SWF file converters, like Flash to Video Converter, to open it, or convert it for using on the hardware, such as iPod, iPhone, PSP, etc.

Thanks for your comment. I have never heard of AnvSoft Photo Flash Maker before, however it really is missing the point of this post. I am talking about how to insert a flash object into a website, mainly for SEO or search engine optimisation purposes, not how to create flash in the first place. We are professional flash designers and custom build all flash that we create.

I am sure the software you speak of however, would be great for users with not so much experience in create flash or inserting it into their website / blog.

I would like to see an example of where this player is used on a website, as I bet you any money the output in the code is:

1). Not as clean as the swf object
2). Does not allow you to place alternate content for the bots to crawl and
3). Doesn’t have a auto install feature for users who do not have flash installed

The swfobject in my book still is the very best way to insert flash onto a website, and would be interested to hear other web designers opinions here.
